International Head-to-Head –Part Three, Spain and Yugoslavia-Part 1 (1930s-1970s)

Note: As a Footbaling entity, Yugoslavia ceased to exist at the end of 2002. However, for the purposes of this analysis I have chosen to include Serbia and Montenegro (2003/06) and Serbia (2006- ) as well.

1930s
The very first match between the nations took place in 1932 at Oviedo with Spain winning. The following year they met again at Belgrade (1-1 tie).
Due to the War and ideological differences (perhaps), the sides did not meet again for decades.

1970s
The meetings intensified in this decade when the two sides were paired in qualifying groups. Yugoslavia eliminated Spain and qualified for the 1974 World Cup. Spain blocked Yugoslavia’s path for the 1978 World Cup and the 1980 Euros.
For the 1977 World cup qualifier, Juanito was injured in the 76th minute, as he was on the touchline he was struck on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands and knocked unconscious. He was taken to a hospital and required stitches.
For the 1979 match, a linesman was hit with an orange from the stands.
